Briana attended an event to benefit the Central Asia Institute which builds schools in the remote mountain villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan. She met the founder, Greg Mortenson (of mountain climbing fame), and he showed slides and told the history of his organization. Orca School of Santa Barbara, which now has a sister CAI school, hosted the program and provided wonderful desserts.

Briana attended an afternoon reception at a Montecito home to raise funds for "Education from Santa Barbara to Afghanistan and Back". Kathleen Rafiq, KEYT-TV producer, humanitarian, lecturer and educator to schools & other groups spoke at the event. She has traveled to Afghanistan and will be going again soon to take books and video equipment to schools in Wardak Province. A hairdresser named Lyndy will be going along to teach at the Kabul Beauty School.

The group announced a fundraising drive for the Project for Peace: a trip to Afghanistan to create a documentary about RAWA's work, to help stop terrorism and rebuild Afghanistan from the inside.

Briana and volunteers Mary Jones and Lauren Hanson attended the annual Fund for Santa Barbara "Bread & Roses" fundraising event at the Santa Barbara Women's Club. Many local politicians and progressives attended, taking part in silent and live auctions, and enjoying wonderful food, wine and musicians.

Briana attended the UCSB Women's Studies "Fall Welcome Back" event. Local groups were asked to make a brief presentation about their groups and any intern or volunteer positions available. Briana also made new contacts with other local groups and with women in the Women's Studies department. Our group is now listed in a hand-out booklet and in their files.

Briana attended the Santa Barbara Women's Political Committee 17th annual dinner celebration, "Raising our Voices"; the dynamic and funny speaker was progressive talk show host Stephanie Miller, who is featured on a 1340 AM local radio morning show. Briana represented our group, talking to local politicians, handing out cards, and telling new people about our group and RAWA.

We held our 6th annual Holiday Bazaar of Afghan Handicrafts at a new location, Garden St. at Pueblo, generously hosted by Lynn Montgomery in front of her house. Shoppers enjoyed ethnic music by members of the UCSB Middle Eastern Ensemble, along with coffee and treats. Handicrafts for sale included embroidered purses & bags, wallets, wall pockets, shirts, shawls, mirrored pillows, bedspreads, antique Afghan jewelry, carved and stone pendants, great rings (there was a NEW shipment of jewelry!) and carpets, along with books and videos. Local vendors sold items from other countries: Africa, Thailand, Tanzania & Iran, as well as pottery and knitted goods. It was a successful sale, and we were blessed with a sunny day. Many thanks to all our volunteers and supporters for your help, purchases and donations!
